In 1853, five prominent residents of Franeker founded the Permanent Committee (P.C.) in order to `promote and preserve the sport of kaatsen (Frisian handball)`, a sport that was waning rapidly at the time. This initiative grew into the most important kaatsen tournament in Friesland.
