St Lawrence, Canada

The St. Lawrence estuary is south of Labrador, Canada. The mailboat that I took in the summer of 2010 was called Nordik Express and it sails on the St. Lawrence river along the north coast of Labrador, the so-called Lower North Shore. Every week the Nordik Express calls in at ten villages there. Apart from planes and in winter, snowmobiles - boats provide the only access to these places. This mailboat is still a real coastal supply ship: lots of cargo and few tourists. It`s mainly locals who use this boat and they still use it for its original purpose. There are only two months of the year (January and February) when the Nordik Express doesn`t operate. During the remaining winter months icebreakers help keeping the route open, when necessary.
